For many years this was the furthest school we worked with from our offices in Tissa.

It is situated some way inland from the main Hambantota to Galle road, which sweeps around the island and was recommended to us by Mr Piyasena, the Zonal Director of Educataion.

It is easy to see why he liked the school and wanted to help.

Its new Principal had done his best with very limited funds to brighten the school up with plants and wall hangings.

But it lacked basic infrastructure, which the government hadn't the funds to provide.

Over the next few years, we tried to rectify this by renovating two disused classrooms and turning them into a library and computer block.

However, the children have probably most appreciated the playground equipment, which came thanks to a donation from the Yala Fund.
