Until very recently Kotagoda was a rural school, about 30 minutes inland from Galle by three-wheeler.

It now boasts the "distinction" of overlooking Sri Lanka's first ever expressway linking the capital to its leading Southern city.

We came across the school thanks to a recommendation from the Zonal Education Office in Galle.

We immediately liked Kotagoda as the Principal was extremely helpful and the school was well maintained.

However, while it had a number of buildings and plenty of classrooms, there were no additional facilities such as a library, computer or science lab.

Thanks to a donation from HSBC, we were able to turn one classroom into a library and Zonal Office has recently appointed a librarian to man it.
