Weerahela is a rural school serving farming families on low incomes.

This was really driven home at the opening ceremony for the library we built.

Unlike other schools, none of the school band who played for had special uniforms since their parents couldn't afford them.

We wanted to give the children a treat and announced plans for a trip during the opening ceremony speeches.

It prompted the loudest cheers we've yet received.

Some months later and the whole school was off on a three day trip around the island.

Amazingly, the then Principal said he had never seen the sea before despite living less than one hour away from the coast.
