Internet Training

Posted on by Mr Tharindu

One of the best ways to expand children’s horizons is to give them access to the internet.

But most schools in the Southern Province only got their first computer a couple of years ago and many still lack any equipment at all.

The internet is even more of a rarity because schools do not have a budget to pay for the monthly access charges.

Consequently, hardly any schools have their own webpage.

We have taken the first steps to overcome this by establishing a web-training course for government teachers.

We have organised this in association with the Ministry of Education, SLIIT, a major training institute in Matara (three hours away by bus) and the University of Moratuwa in Colombo.

For our first two-day session, we had a full house at our Mahasenpura Community Computer Centre, with attendance from 30 teachers.

The original idea was to send them back to their schools to form web design teams among their students and then take part in a competition to build school websites, which would close at the end of May.

However, we discovered their existing knowledge was not as good as we hoped and we will now run a second two day course in early 2014, again in association with SLIIT.

While the training is taking place, all the schools will be registered into a special programme providing free domain names and hosting for schools run by the University of Moratuwa.

We are also hoping to get some of the schools onto a second programme providing free internet access as well.

The competition will now close in the autumn of 2014, which should give all the schools plenty of time to finalise their designs.

The winners will be selected by SRI, SLIIT and the sponsor, Barclays Bank, which is kindly funding the entire programme. Selected schools will either receive free internet access and/or equipment.

To facilitate better ideas we have also set up a computer club at the MCCC for the IT teachers in the area so they can trade information.

PowerPoint competition

DSC_3498Congratulations to Madeesha Chathurangi who won our Microsoft PowerPoint competition this October.

The student from Tissa MV school beat 40 other individual entrants plus two group entries from Ikkapalama and Uduwila schools.

Her presentation was chosen because it was extremely well structured and featured strong content.

This covered the impact of oxygen on fire.

Mr Kithsiri, Zonal Director for IT, presented Madeesha with a USB pen drive and some IT books at a special ceremony at the Mahasenpura Community Computer Centre (MCCC).

Second and third place winners were Kasuni Maduga also from Tissa MV school and Ajith Maduranga from Weligatha school.

They also received some IT books.

We hope to make this an annual competition and would like to thank Barclays Bank for their sponsorship of the event.
