• Pre-renovation, just two cupboards with dog-eared books

About 40 miles inland from Galle, Lelawa is situated right on the edge of the Southern tea plantations and largely serves families working on the nearby estates.

Its pupils are, therefore, a mix of both Tamil and Sinhalese.

We became involved with the school following a recommendation from the Zonal Education Office in Galle.

Closer inspection revealed a small school with an assortment of classrooms and little else, least of all books for the children to read.

Thanks to a donation and parternship with HSBC, we were able to turn one of the classrooms into a library, which we opened in November 2011.
